Onion ring v. onion ring

Can you make onion rings at home that are as unwholesomely delicious as those prepared by an adolescent fry cook at Burger King?

Isabel and I performed this very experiment last night.

Our august tasting panel:

Don't laugh. Who better? The boys did an estimable job.

I have to withhold the verdict for a few days because this is part of the best work assignment ever, at least if your life goals no longer include curing cancer, winning a Pulitzer Prize, or making pots of money. That would be me.

Our stout brown onion ring is on the left, the BK "onion" ring is on the right.

Like I said, the results of the experiment, plus many thoughts, in a few days.

  1. I agree that you can't judge right away. You need time to see which one gives you more GERD. :)

  2. You have stacked the deck in your favor--Burger King's onion rings are recommended with reservations at best! You need some real onion rings from a greasy spoon truck stop to have a truly fair contest.

  3. My love of onion rings, fortunately for my arteries, is outweighed only by my fear of deep frying. (My lottery dream is that I can install a fryer 60 feet away from our house so I don't need to smell it or live my days convinced it will explode and burn down my house.
Looking forward to results and congrats on the Best Job Ever!

  4. The decks were stacked for me -- I agree about BK onion rings. They are not a worthy foe. But I have to play the hand I was dealt.
MemeGRL -- you must overcome this fear! Deep frying is very easy, the only hard part is figuring out what to do w. all the leftover oil or Crisco.

  5. I agree about BK rings. The best ones I have had are at the drive in near our house, which is only open in the summer, but boy, I save an entire day's calories just to eat one order of those. And they are definitely deep fried!!

  6. I don't see what the prob is with Burger King's onion rings. No, they're not really onion rings, but you can sub them for fries at no extra charge and then you can put a couple on your Whopper (no cheese) to enhance the sandwich.

  7. By the way, Choosy Beggars has a recipe for oven-baked onion rings that I have yet to try, but think they would be great. Maybe you should do those too. Do you want to be a real scientist or not?

  8. I would be interested in hearing whether the calorie count is significantly different. (I don't know if that's possible to figure out.) A cost comparison would be interesting too.

  9. Onion rings are my favorite! As a teenager, I had one day off a week from my summer job (living with a family and taking care of their kids). I always spent the day eating onion rings.
Can we PLEASE have them for thanksgiving???

  10. I try onion rings at every single place I eat. If I could find the perfect recipe to eat at home, oh boy my diet would be in trouble. Can't wait to hear the results!
