What is this, Jennifer, a glass blog?

I may like STUFF too much.
If I even have any blog readers left, I apologize to you for my absence. Two things happened almost simultaneously in the last month.
  1. As I mentioned in the last post, I was assigned to write a story about art glass and the learning curve has been super-steep. Busy, busy, busy. As I also mentioned in the last post, I’m now a little obsessed with glass. Not so much art glass, as glass itself. I bought some bowls that are too wide to be easily used as vases, but can be if I figure out how to use a frog. My mother knew all about frogs and had a whole collection that I gave to Goodwill after she died because I couldn't imagine ever needing a frog. Oh well. But before I go buy a frog I have to finish writing this story about glass. Like, by a few hours ago.
  2. I feel squirmy sharing this second thing, but it’s the real reason I haven’t been blogging and it happens to people all the time so I can’t see any reason to keep it a secret. Except that it makes me feel squirmy. So. In June I had the first MRI of my life, then the second MRI, and then a biopsy. I WAS SO SCARED. The biopsy was no picnic, but the real soul crusher was the uncertainty which dragged on for several weeks. I didn’t curl up in fetal position and start sucking my thumb, but nor did I cheerfully proceed with baking Austrian tortes and blogging and forming an opinion about foolish, foolish Paula Deen. In fact, I decided to skip the whole Paula Deen chapter altogether. One night last week, people were talking about her and I just got up and cleared the table. Fortunately, this turned out to be a health scare as a opposed to a health catastrophe. There is nothing wrong. I am hugely relieved, though having enjoyed a small taste of 21st century medical drama, I hope to be eaten by wild guinea pigs immediately before the next health scare or catastrophe.
What else can I tell you? It is very hot, I thoroughly enjoyed World War Z, and there is now a baby bobcat preying on our chickens. I find myself unable to hate a baby bobcat.

  1. Fie on health scares. I'm glad that it didn't rise above that level.

  2. Glad to hear it was only a scare, but, boy, they grip you like an iron fist until the news is good. Fie on frogs---just find some full flowers like peonies and cut the stems really short. We want to make sure you have room for more cookbooks on those shelves (and not a bunch of frogs...)

  3. Oh my. Glad you are okay.

What is the possibility of using your pizza oven as a glass-blowing forge?

  6. I have missed you, and I am so happy that you are well. As a nurse, I avoid all medical drama, and I understand completely the vortex that is American medical care. Glad you achieved escape velocity! I told my husband about the wild guinea pigs, and he howled with laughter. Be assured that we are always glad to hear from you, no matter the content of the message. Baby bobcat?! Are you kidding?

  9. I always wanted to be the kind of woman who had some "frogs" for flowers in the cupboard. Sadly, no, I just stick them in the vase. Glad you survived medical hell.

  10. How awful for you and your family. So glad you're out of that tunnel. And thanks for addressing it so forthrightly. I'm afraid that you are now burdened with fans who after a long silence on your part begin thinking, "Hmm, hope everything's OK . . . "

  11. Baby bobcats grow up to be adult bobcats. Just sayin'...

  12. Whew! Really glad you are okay. Trust me when I say I know exactly what you went through with the medical community. They probably don't mean to but they scare the living cr*p out of everyone.
Now we know why that bobcat needed all of those chickens. She was preg! Stay well.

  14. I am thrilled that all is well that ends well. When my MRI showed what I lovingly call my brain damage (13 years ago) I remember a doctor friend saying, It's great to have these nifty scanners until you are a false positive.
And am totally with you on STUFF lovage. I became obsessed with GlassyBaby a few years ago but did not succumb. I am not sorry but I still think about them. Good luck with the obsession and article.

  15. So so glad you're back and recovering from the horrible shock of a lengthy health scare. Please never forget that your loyal readers are here for you - as much as cyber friends can be. Less seriously, you can put floral foam in glass - inexpensive and won't damage you glass like a frog might. All the best Tipsy!!
P.s. miss your alcohol units talley - perhaps you can indulge a little this summer

  16. Really happy that you are doing well. I don't think guinea pig sounds like a good idea. We would miss you.

  17. That is so scary - - very glad it all ended up being okay! I kept checking for a new post, and thought we'd lost you to an art glass obsession. Happy you're back in business!

  18. Glad to hear that you're okay and sorry you had to go through a health scare.

A coyote scaled our 8' fence and picked off my two favorite chickens recently (Cuckoo Marans - dark brown eggs!). Then I caught him in our yard not twenty feet from our house and I chased him like a screaming farmwife with a broom. Seemed to do the trick. Good luck with the bobcat and the skunk.

  19. I have maybe three frogs, undoubtedly relics from my mother. I use them all the time. I'm a fan of short bowls of flowers rather than elaborate arrangements, but the frogs facilitate that too.

Glad you are not ill. I had no idea you were going through such a crisis.

Are you considering trying to trap the bobcats? They aren't big and scary like mountain lions, so maybe you could set up a trap and relocate them. I did it with a possum last year (it had eaten one of my hens.) I know a bobcat is a much more intimidating animal, but I hate to think of you losing so many birds. And I suppose electrifying your perimeter is out of the question?

Are you maybe thinking of taking a glass-blowing class? I would love to do that.

  22. So glad you are OK! I would miss your blog if you died. Also, I had one of those health scares recently (biopsy and all) and I can totally relate with how it kind of puts your whole life into some horrible, surreal slow motion. Nothing I would want to repeat for sure.

  23. So glad everything turned out OK. I've been through one scare and one Real Thing so far. The scare didn't scare me because I knew it would turn out to be nothing and the doctor was just being extra cautious. It was just a spell of massive tedium, discomfort, nasty drinks, and strange machines. The Real Thing didn't scare me because I could tell that this time I was doomed. The bad part was the 3-week lead-up to surgery. I too found it hard to work up any enthusiasm for my former interests, although I did start to follow Top Chef, which got me through some sleepless nights.

What fascinates me about glass is how much of it has survived from ancient times and is sitting in museums, 2000 years old. Obviously whoever owned it wasn't related to me.

  24. Those health scares are awful. I'm so glad it turned out to be OK. But for those of us who have been through that exact health scare and the scare has turned out to be reality, "catastrophe" is not the word we want to attach to it. You deal with the treatments and try to move on. A word other than "catastrophe" would be kinder to us all.

  40. It is vital in these days to have a social media presence. Many businesses overlook this necessity for future growth. It may be more important than putting in more funding. Pricing properly is key, of course. But investing more is not always the best option. Sometimes it’s better to cut unnecessary costs.
