Speaking of hot chocolate

Here in Barcelona it is like warm mousse.

We barely got out the door on this vacation. We arrived earlier this afternoon and I am so incredibly strung out, but so happy to be here.

If anyone has recommendations for Barcelona restaurants, museums, shops, side trips -- anything -- let me know.

  1. Treat yourself to a nice piece of bread with sobrasada; it is not precisely healthy, but you will love it. You can get it at some grocery store with good embutidos (charcuterie).

  2. Awesome! I had a great meal at Cal Pep. Also, the best xixona turron at Planelles Donat:

Didn't really like turron until I tried it. Wish I'd brought some home.

  3. If you have any interest in history/archeology/Roman Empire, don't miss the Museu d'Historia de la Ciutat. The museum is built on excavations of Roman ruins, and you go down and walk around in them.

  4. I loved Los Caracoles in the gothic quarter. I believe the restaurant has been there since the 1800s, and it oozes character (think meat roasting on a spit in the front window). I ate one of the best meals of my life there, the waitstaff was wonderful (they all lined up and shook my hand on the way out. I'm still not sure why--maybe b/c I left a tip??), and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Have fun! Barcelona is one of my happy places on the planet.

  5. Ah, I've heard about European hot chocolate being a solid when cold. Cool to see it in real life!

Please to describe your trip in technicolor detail once you're home.

  7. *Everything* chocolate is amazing in Barcelona.

Also, have some calamari. It's like a whole different food over there.

  8. Three recommendations...
La Bodegueta, a Catalan taverna in the Poble Sec District, had amazing grilled vegetables and meat.

Jamonisimo, basically a high-end deli, which serves ham raised on hazelnuts. We had a pricey tasting platter there, but it was well worth it. And yes, it does have some sort of wonderful Nutella flavour to it.

Finally, I'd suggest trying Tapac 24. The deep fried artichoke chips were the highlight for me, while my husband still raves about the "Kentucky Fried" rabbit ribs.

  9. Bar Mut and Tapas 24. Bar and restaurant at Market Hotel--it's worth going just for the decor.
