If you ever do make it, may I recommend:

1) The ganache was really a bit too much for my family--we could have used a light glaze, at most.
2) Having 4 10" pans made the cake much easier. I mixed the angel food cake, put it in two separate pans, and threw them in the oven. Without washing the mixer, I made the devil's food cake and put it in two separate pans, throwing it into the oven to cook alongside the angel food cake. (The slightly different temps didn't make a lot of difference in cooking time for the devil's food cake--about 5 to 7 minutes extra.)
3) While my 4 cakes cooked simultaneously, I made the peanut butter mousse, then threw it in the fridge to chill.
4) When the cakes were done, I cooled them. At assembly time, there was no cake cutting--just stack, mousse, stack, mousse, etc.

The cake was a big hit, but was large enough to serve dozens of people. It was also so tall it didn't really fit in a regular refrigerator (unless you move all your milk to the door or sideways on lower shelves).

Verdict: It doesn't have to be hard to make, but it makes way too much for most folks and is impossible to store without a commercial fridge.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27849118.post-65672669033608266492010-12-10T18:46:18.259-08:002010-12-10T18:46:18.259-08:00The cake seems aptly named "Heaven and Hell.&...The cake seems aptly named "Heaven and Hell." I frosted that sucker white, put a bowl over the center hole and frosted it too, then put colored M&M's around it all and some licorice antennae at the top. Made for a pretty good spaceship, I'd say.
